The Feeling of Home

Something good on the stove.

Four simple simmer pots for ordinary days at home.

Some of the things we remember most about home are the smallest: orange peel on the counter, cinnamon in the kitchen, a familiar song playing while dinner cooks.

A simmer pot is an easy way to bring a little of that feeling into an ordinary day. Choose one blend below, gather a saucepan and water, and enjoy it while you spend time in the kitchen.

Simmer pot recipe collection with a sunlit cream saucepan and four ingredient arrangements

The Fall Kitchen

  • Peel of 1 orange
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves

Warm citrus with a familiar touch of spice. Try it while preparing a simple family supper.

Sunday Morning

  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 2 fresh rosemary sprigs

Fresh lemon with a green, herbal note. A small ritual for a morning spent at home.

Apple Orchard Afternoon

  • Peels from 1 apple
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Peel of ½ orange

A softly spiced blend; the apple scent is subtle. Save the peels when making an afternoon snack.

December at Home

  • ½ orange, sliced
  • ¼ cup cranberries
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Orange and cinnamon lead this festive blend. Cranberries add color; begin with what you have.

How to make your simmer pot

  1. Add your chosen ingredients and 4 cups of water to a small saucepan.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
  3. Enjoy for 20–30 minutes while you are in the kitchen. Check the water often and add more before it gets low.
  4. Turn off the heat before leaving the kitchen.

Stay nearby and never let the pot boil dry. This mixture is for scent, not drinking.

Use what you have

Leftover citrus and apple peels work well. Skip an ingredient you do not have; the blends are flexible. The scent varies with the freshness of your ingredients and the size of your room.

Ingredient photographs are styled illustrations of the blends. Follow the written quantities when preparing your pot.

Bring a good question to the table

What scent brings a memory to mind?

Ask everyone: “What food or smell reminds you of someone you love?” You might hear about a grandparent’s kitchen, a favorite birthday breakfast, or something you make together.
